Racism won't end as long as more than one race exists. Humans will forever cling to a "survival of the fittest" attitude or what author Donald Miller calls the "Lifeboat Theory" - if the world was on a lifeboat built for five and you were the sixth person, whom would you throw off? We don't want to be at the bottom of the food chain or at the bottom of the ocean. As self-defense, we pick on those different from us.
So it doesn't surprise me that a lot of racial tension has arisen since the elections. The Associated Press article, "Obama victory inflames racists: Even 2nd-graders chant vile slogans" (Nov. 16), reported a half-dozen discrimination events throughout the country. People as young as 8 have shown distaste for Barack Obama through threats, racist graffiti and hate-filled chants.
This is disgusting. I want to believe our country is past this. But as long as humans have dominion over the earth, racism is going to exist. No one wants to be grouped with the weaker crowd, and so they fight to keep their higher position. Until we can get past that, there's little hope that racism will ever end.
