Movie rentals putting cash into students' pockets

Indiana Wesleyan University's Sojourn, online and in print

Thursday, September 10, 2009 » Indiana Wesleyan students can rent fellow classmates’ movies and video games at IWU Re-View, a service provided by IWU.biz. Those willing to donate their media for the semester or year will receive a small commission whenever someone rents their DVD or game.

Movies cost $1 to rent per night for members and $2 for non-members, according to store owner Stephanie McKinley (jr). Games can be rented in three-day segments for $3 for members and $4 for non-members. To become a member, one must have 10 DVDs on shelf at IWU Re-View.

Commission depends upon what is rented and for how long, said McKinley. Students can receive between 50 cents and $2, she said.

Natalie Nicholson (so) is skeptical about the new business, and is concerned about her DVDs getting damaged. But according to McKinley, a quality control system is in place in case discs are scratched or stolen. Those who did the damage will have to pay, and the disc owner will be compensated.

Its a good idea, Nicholson said, if they can work [the kinks] out.

Avid movie-watcher Robert Robinson (so) said he will probably use the service for renting both DVDs and video games. Although he does not have DVDs to donate, he said he imagines a lot of students will for the commission.

Obviously, [students] will keep their favorite [DVDs], Robinson said, but the ones that they dont watch as much, they might [donate] in order to make a little money.

IWU Re-View not only rents out DVDs and video games, but also sells candy and popcorn.

Specifically were going to focus on having what I call candy from when you were a kid the older types of candy you associate with your childhood, said McKinley. IWU Re-View sells specialty popcorn flavors like cheese and candy-coated.

Tables and chairs fill the store as well, and there will always be a movie playing, said McKinley.

I want people to be able to come and spend time in here too, even if they do not want to rent a DVD or buy popcorn, said McKinley. They can always come in and have another place outside their room to come hang out.

The store is located in the east side of the student center, the former location of My Roommates Closet.
